GLEOCAPSA MAGMA ALGAE
The black marks on tile are made by Gleocapsa Magma Algae, a one celled plant that grows in a colony. It grows on the dead algae from previous generations.
GMA needs is a habitat.
The pours in cement fill with dirt from the air. GMA falls on the dirt and begin to grow and multiply. Each generation expands the single cell colony. The bigger colony then acts as a retarder for normal evaporation of water that has been absorbed in the tiles.
GMA is a plant and plants require the sun.
Plants convert carbon dioxide into organic compounds using the energy of sunlight. This is called photosynthesis. As long as plants have water and the sun, they will grow. You can not take away the sun but you can take away the water by sealing your tile roof with HYDRO-SHEEN after washing with RTC 5000 CLEANER.
Stain removers work on the foundation of the colony and the surface of the tiles. By loosening the base of dirt and dead algae cells you make it easier to remove the colony. When the base is loose the pressure needed to rinse the surface goes down. With RTC 5000 we recommend between 12 and 1500 pounds from 8 inches from the surface. The major benefit is using cleaners or stain removers that do not include bleach is that they do the job easily without putting plants, grass, bushes and trees under any stress. Alberson’s RTC 5000 CLEANER is environmentally safe. The “GREEN” solution.
Algae removal in the south today is actually promoting algae growth. To correct this action you must stop unnatural weathering of the tile surface by not using acids and lowering the rinse off pressure when cleaning a tile roof. To increase the look and durability of a tile roof you then must seal the surface after washing with 2 coats of a sealer that includes an algaecide. This sealing also stops water from entering the algae colony from the tile and promoting growth of Gleocapsa Magma Algae...
